Why Lurndo suits you

  • At your own pace

A lesson takes a few minutes, and you stop whenever you like. Your progress is saved.

  • Explained in plain language

No jargon without an explanation. Every new idea comes with a sheet where the cells light up, so you can see what it's about.

  • Big and clear

Big buttons, clear colours for right and wrong, and a spreadsheet that's easy to use on a tablet too.

  • Mistakes are fine

Hints get more concrete one by one, and after a few tries you may look at the solution. A lesson never stops because you made a mistake.

How to start

The first three modules lay the foundations, and they're free. With them you can already keep a budget or a list of members.

  1. 1First sheetYour first client with a spreadsheet: The Golden Chip, a chip shop in Whitby. You learn to read cells, calculate with formulas, add up with SUM and fill formulas down.
  2. 2Functions and referencesYour second client: the Green Fingers allotments in Harrogate. You learn to calculate with functions like AVERAGE, MAX and ROUND, to count what is there and what is missing, and to lock references with $.
  3. 3LogicYour third client: The Splash swimming pool in Tamworth. You learn to compare, to choose with IF, to combine conditions with AND and OR, and to deal with empty cells and error values.

Why does my formula go wrong when I drag it down?

Excel moves your references along. If E2 holds =C2*D2, E3 gets =C3*D3. Handy, until one cell has to stay put, like a VAT rate in H1: one row down that becomes H2, which is empty.

So put a $ before whatever mustn't move: $H$1 points to the same cell in every copy. Which cell has to stay put in your formula?

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old to learn Excel?

No. You don't need any prior knowledge, and you set the pace yourself. Every lesson explains what you need to know before you start.

Do I need to have Excel?

No. You practise in your browser, on a computer, a tablet or a phone. What you learn works in Excel itself afterwards too.

Is it free?

The first three modules are free, without an account. They cover calculating, the most important functions and IF.

What if I get stuck?

Every exercise has hints that get more concrete one by one. After a few tries you may look at the solution, with an explanation of why it's right.
