Never written a formula? Perfect.
Lurndo assumes you know nothing yet. The first lesson starts with the question of what a cell is, and every new idea only comes once the previous one has sunk in.
There's nothing to install, and you don't need Excel of your own. You type your first formula within a minute, and the sheet works it out straight away.
Why Lurndo suits you
One thing at a time
Every lesson teaches you one new idea. First a short explanation with a sheet where the cells light up, then a few exercises that slowly get harder.
Explained in plain language
No jargon without an explanation. With every answer you read why it's right, not just that it's right.
Point at cells, just like in Excel
You tap or drag across the cells you need, and the reference appears in your formula by itself. On your phone too.
Mistakes are fine
Hints get more concrete one by one, and after a few tries you may look at the solution. A lesson never stops because you made a mistake.
Your first formula
How much did the small chips bring in on Saturday? In D2, type a formula that multiplies the price in B2 by the quantity in C2.

How to start
The first three modules lay the foundations, and they're free. After that you decide how far you go.
- 1First sheetYour first client with a spreadsheet: The Golden Chip, a chip shop in Whitby. You learn to read cells, calculate with formulas, add up with SUM and fill formulas down.
- 2Functions and referencesYour second client: the Green Fingers allotments in Harrogate. You learn to calculate with functions like AVERAGE, MAX and ROUND, to count what is there and what is missing, and to lock references with $.
- 3LogicYour third client: The Splash swimming pool in Tamworth. You learn to compare, to choose with IF, to combine conditions with AND and OR, and to deal with empty cells and error values.

Why does my formula go wrong when I drag it down?
Excel moves your references along. If E2 holds =C2*D2, E3 gets =C3*D3. Handy, until one cell has to stay put, like a VAT rate in H1: one row down that becomes H2, which is empty.
So put a $ before whatever mustn't move: $H$1 points to the same cell in every copy. Which cell has to stay put in your formula?

Do I need to have Excel?
No. You practise in a spreadsheet in your browser. What you learn works in Excel itself afterwards too.
Is it free?
The first three modules are free, without an account. They cover calculating, the most important functions and IF.
How long does a lesson take?
A few minutes. You can stop whenever you like, and your progress is saved.
