Lurndo › HTML & CSS › HTML for marketing and comms

In marketing or communications? Then you'll meet HTML.

A link that doesn't work in the newsletter, a subheading that suddenly looks different in the CMS, an image without a description: if you work in marketing or communications, you meet HTML every week.

You don't have to become a web developer. With the basics of HTML and CSS you fix what's askew yourself, and you can talk shop with whoever builds the site.

Why Lurndo suits you

  • Everyday HTML

Headings, paragraphs, links, images with alt, lists and tables. Exactly what's in a newsletter, a blog post or a CMS.

  • Good for search engines

You learn why one h1 per page matters, what makes good link text and how semantic HTML helps search engines.

  • Accessible to everyone

An alt on every image, enough contrast and a label on every field. That way your message reaches people who don't see well too.

  • Short lessons

A lesson takes a few minutes. Ideal between two tasks, on your phone too.

Make a link

Turn the heading Our flavours into a link to flavours.html. The heading itself stays.

What you need

The first three modules are what you meet most in marketing, and they're free. Module 8 teaches you forms and accessibility.

  1. 1First pageYour first client with a website: Cold Comfort, an ice cream parlour in Brighton. You learn what HTML is, write headings and paragraphs, nest elements, add emphasis, make links and put images on the page.
  2. 2First styleYour second client: the Snip & Curl hair salon in Leeds. You learn what CSS is, how to link a stylesheet, and you give the site colours, good-looking text, backgrounds and the right sizes.
  3. 3Structure and meaningYour third client: The Cosy Basket, an animal shelter in Rochdale. You make lists and tables, divide the page into blocks that say what they are, learn when a div fits, write valid HTML and build a menu for a site with several pages.
  4. 8Positioning and responsiveYour eighth client: Broken? Not Today!, a repair café in Dorchester. You hang tags where they belong, make the header stick to the top, build the site mobile first with media queries and images that scale, make an accessible sign-up form and give everything its own colour and a soft transition.

Why won't my link turn red? My rule is right there.

Most likely another rule wins. When two rules pick the same element, the more specific one wins: nav a beats a, even if a comes later in your file. Only when they're equal does the last one win.

So look for a selector that points at your link more precisely than yours. Which one do you find?

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to learn to program?

No. HTML and CSS describe what's on a page and how it looks. Programming, with JavaScript, is another course.

Does this help with my CMS?

Yes. Every CMS stores your text as HTML. If you dare to open the HTML view, you can fix yourself what the editor gets wrong.

Is it free?

The first three modules are free, without an account. They hold the HTML you need most in a newsletter or blog post.

How long does it take?

A lesson takes a few minutes. The first three modules add up to eighteen lessons.
