SQL for beginners

Never written a line of code? Perfect.

Lurndo assumes you know nothing yet. The first lesson starts with the question of what a table is, and every new idea only comes once the previous one has sunk in.

There's nothing to install and nothing to memorise before you begin. You type your first query within a minute, and you see straight away what it does.

Why Lurndo suits you

  • One thing at a time

Every lesson teaches you one new idea. First a short explanation with a table that lights up, then a few exercises that slowly get harder.

  • Explained in plain language

No jargon without an explanation. With every answer you read why it's right, not just that it's right.

  • You see what happens

Rows dropping out, tables sliding together, groups forming. You see step by step what SQL does with your data.

  • Mistakes are fine

A mistake costs a heart at most. Hints get more concrete one by one, and after a few tries you may look at the solution.

Your first query

Show the name and the price of every product of the coffee roastery.

How to start

The first three modules lay the foundations, and they're free. After that you decide how far you go.

  1. 1First dayYour first client as a freelance data analyst: the Bonen & Co coffee roastery. You learn to read tables and fetch data with SELECT.
  2. 2Second dayYour second client: Rewind, the video store in Mechelen. You learn to find exactly the rows you're looking for with WHERE, comparisons, AND/OR/NOT, IN, BETWEEN, LIKE and NULL.
  3. 3Third dayYour third client: the Zomerklank music festival in Hasselt. You learn to sort results with ORDER BY, on several columns, and to remove duplicates with DISTINCT.

No. You need to be able to type a little, nothing more. Everything is explained from scratch.

What is SQL, actually?

SQL is the language you use to ask a database questions. You write, for example, "show the customers from Gent" in a few words, and the database gives you exactly those rows.

Is it free?

The first three modules are free, without an account. They teach you to get, filter and sort data.

How long does a lesson take?

A few minutes. You can stop whenever you like, and your progress is saved.
