Lurndo › Touch typing › From two fingers to ten

Typing with two fingers for years? Here is how to switch.

Two fingers get you far, but your eyes go back and forth between screen and keyboard. With ten-finger typing, every finger has its own keys and returns to its place on the home row after each keystroke.

Switching feels strange at first. That is why you learn a few keys at a time here, with the keyboard and your hands on the screen.

Why Lurndo suits you

  • Every finger its keys

The finger zones on the screen show which finger types which key, in colour and with a letter.

  • Break the old habit

After a mistake you see which finger should have typed. After three mistakes on the same character, the right finger and key light up.

  • Without looking

First you see the keyboard, then only which finger types, and in the end nothing. That is how you learn to trust your fingers.

  • Your progress in view

After every line you see your mistakes, your rhythm and your speed per word.

How to switch

Start at the home row, even if you have typed for years. The first three modules are free.

  1. 1The home rowYour first client as a typist: local station Radio Ripple in Ludlow. You rest your fingers on the home row, feel F and J, and teach every finger its own keys, until you type your first words without looking.
  2. 2The top rowVillage paper The Clapper in Hexham needs a typist. You reach every finger up to the top row, add N for and, in and on, and type your first full sentences.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really have to start again?

Yes, at the home row. If you already type, you will get through the first lessons faster. What matters is using the right finger, even if it is slower at first.

Which finger types which key?

Your index fingers rest on F and J, the other fingers beside them. Each finger types the keys above and below its place. The cheat sheet shows it for every keyboard.

How long does switching take?

It differs per person. With a short lesson a day you get there step by step; the more often you practise, the sooner the new habit sticks.
