Lurndo › Touch typing › Touch typing on AZERTY

Touch typing on a Belgian AZERTY keyboard.

Many typing courses are made for QWERTY. On a Belgian AZERTY keyboard, A, Z, Q, W and M sit elsewhere, and the full stop and the digits need Shift.

Here every lesson follows your keyboard. The same finger types the same place, and the screen shows the letters on your keys.

Why Lurndo suits you

  • Your letters on screen

A lesson names keys by their place, and the screen shows what is on your keyboard. Your left little finger rests on Q on AZERTY, and on A on QWERTY.

  • The pitfalls of AZERTY

The full stop and digits with Shift, é on the 2, the umlaut with a dead key and the at sign with AltGr each get their turn.

  • On a Mac too

On a Belgian Mac a few symbols sit elsewhere than in Windows, like @. Choose your keyboard and the lessons follow.

  • Switching is fine

AZERTY at home and QWERTY at work? You choose your keyboard per device.

  1. 1The home rowYour first client as a typist: local station Radio Ripple in Ludlow. You rest your fingers on the home row, feel F and J, and teach every finger its own keys, until you type your first words without looking.
  2. 2The top rowVillage paper The Clapper in Hexham needs a typist. You reach every finger up to the top row, add N for and, in and on, and type your first full sentences.

Frequently asked questions

Why is A in a different place?

AZERTY comes from French and has a different order than QWERTY. For touch typing it does not matter, because you learn where the letters are on your keyboard.

How do I type a full stop on AZERTY?

With Shift and the key with ; and the full stop, right of the comma. Forget Shift and you type ; instead of a full stop.

How do I type @ on a Belgian keyboard?

In Windows with AltGr and the é key. The help page about the at sign shows it for every keyboard.

Does Lurndo know which keyboard I have?

The first lesson asks for three keys and then knows your keyboard. You can also pick it yourself, with a drawing to compare.
